What is VIRGIN MEDIA on my bank statement?

This is your monthly Virgin Media bill — covering broadband, TV, home phone, or a bundle of these services.

Virgin Media — Broadband & TV

✓ Legitimate charge

VIRGIN MEDIA on your bank statement is your monthly bill from Virgin Media — one of the UK's largest cable broadband and TV providers. The charge covers whatever services you have with them: broadband, TV packages (including Sky Sports and BT Sport add-ons), home phone, or a bundled package combining all three.

Virgin Media bills are taken by direct debit on the same date each month. The amount can change when your introductory offer expires — new customers typically get a discounted rate for 12–18 months, after which the full price kicks in. Virgin also applies an annual price increase, usually in April. Both changes should come with 30 days' advance notice.

Since merging with O2 in 2021 to form Virgin Media O2, some customers may see combined billing or joint offers — but the Virgin Media broadband/TV charge still appears separately from any O2 mobile charge on your statement.

Questions about Virgin Media charges

Why is my Virgin Media bill suddenly more expensive?
The two main causes are: your introductory deal ending (new customer deals typically last 12–18 months before prices go up), or Virgin Media's annual price increase in April. Log into My Virgin Media to check your current pricing and whether any notifications were sent about price changes.
How do I cancel Virgin Media?
Call Virgin Media on 0345 454 1111 to cancel. Have your account number ready. You can cancel penalty-free at the end of your contract — check the end date in My Virgin Media. Early cancellation means paying an early disconnection fee based on your remaining contract length.
Am I entitled to compensation for a Virgin Media outage?
Yes — under Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme, Virgin Media must pay you £9.76 per day for every full day your broadband or phone is out after the first two days of an outage. You should also receive compensation if an engineer misses an appointment. This is applied automatically to your next bill.
Can I leave Virgin Media if they increase my price?
If Virgin Media notifies you of a price increase, you typically have 30 days to cancel your contract penalty-free. Contact them within that window citing the price rise. If they didn't give you proper notice, you have additional grounds to exit without fees — contact Virgin and, if needed, escalate to the Communications Ombudsman.
I see two charges — one Virgin Media, one TELEFONICA. Are these related?
Not directly on your bill — TELEFONICA UK is O2 (your mobile network if you're an O2 customer), while VIRGIN MEDIA is your broadband/TV. The two companies merged to form Virgin Media O2 in 2021, but they still bill separately. If you have both services, you'll see two separate charges each month.
